A family in another state was left with many unanswered questions after the death of a loved one on Missouri Highway 30 in April. This was one of many car accidents in which the driver who caused the death of another person simply drove off without stopping to check on the injured victims. However, this time, the driver deemed responsible did not get away with it.
A 25-year-old man from St. Louis was recently arrested by the Missouri State Highway Patrol. It is alleged that he rear-ended a scooter on Highway 30 in the early morning hours on April 24. The scooter lying beside the road was later reported by a passerby, and responding officers failed to locate the rider.
Sometime around 6 p.m. on that day, a jogger — an off-duty deputy — discovered the body of the dead scooter rider under a bush. The search for the driver who caused the death of the 44-year-old man was launched. Reportedly, a clue was obtained from surveillance footage that showed the scooter being dragged along by a white SUV. This was published, and, with the assistance of the public, the driver was identified and arrested.
Although it will not ease the heartache of losing a loved one, this family will now receive some of the answers for which they were likely looking. Now that the alleged negligent driver has been identified, the surviving family members will be able to pursue recovery of losses sustained. A wrongful death claim may be filed in a Missouri civil court, and upon establishing negligence, the court may award a monetary judgment. Surviving family members of deceased victims of car accidents may submit documented claims for financial and emotional damages for consideration by the court.
