Holiday season places people at risk for car accidents

Missouri residents who plan to travel during the holiday season should be cognizant of the various dangers that crop up during that hectic time. It can be a stressful endeavor to take to the roads even if the person is not traveling a great distance. Understanding the various risks that are prevalent not just during Christmas and into New Year’s, but, in general, can be useful to avoid a car accident. Even if you are careful while driving, it is still possible to be involved in a car accident because of someone else’s negligence. Having legal help to receive compensation is imperative after a car accident.

According to AAA, more than 100 million people will be traveling during the time between Christmas and New Year’s Day. That number has steadily increased in the past decade. For those on the road in a vehicle, there are certain foundational factors to remember.

The National Safety Council believes that the number of car accidents during this period could result in more than 300 fatalities and more than 35,000 injuries. These numbers are before New Year’s is taken into account, when there will be people getting behind the wheel after drinking. The NSC says that those who are driving under the influence pose a great risk and it is not just alcohol that is the problem. Impaired driving also encompasses drug use, especially prescription opioids. While some will have a designated driver, many will not.

Distracted driving is a problem throughout the year, but, with more people on the road and with the hurried nature of the holidays, people might be more tempted to reach for their smartphone or other device. This is problematic when directions are sought and they are using the device to help them get to their destination. Distracted driving is a major cause of crashes. A lack of sleep is also an issue. People in a rush to get from one place to the other might shortchange themselves in the rest department and place themselves, their passengers and others on the road at risk.

An accident for any reason can result in injuries, massive medical expenses, lost time at work and fatalities. These holiday tips and concerns to watch for might seem to be preventative, but often people will still get into crashes no matter how vigilant they are. Given the problems that arise after car accidents, having legal assistance to investigate what happened and help you move forward with litigation is key.
