Missouri car accidents: Deputy arrested in fatal collision

Many different kinds of safety concerns threaten those who utilize Missouri roadways. While such users accept a certain degree of risk, they should be able to expect that if someone causes them harm in car accidents, that person will stop and render aid. Unfortunately, a former sheriff’s deputy was recently arrested after he allegedly admitted his involvement in a hit-and-run crash.

The incident happened at approximately 11 p.m. one day in January. According to reports, the driver of a car struck a 45-year-old pedestrian, resulting the latter’s death. The driver of the vehicle is accused of failing to remain at the scene.

An arrest was made in the case after the alleged driver, a 40-year-old sheriff’s deputy, contacted his employer, allegedly admitting to his involvement in the incident. Reports indicate that the man knew that he had struck something, and although he suspected it may have been a human, he claims fear prevented him from stopping. He is said to have admitted to being under the influence of alcohol at the time of the accident. Police say that there was damage to the man’s vehicle, and evidence was collected and sent to the state lab for testing.

While he has been charged with failing to remain at the scene of the accident, Missouri prosecutors claim that the case remains open, indicating additional charges could still be filed. Fortunately, for families who have lost loved ones in car accidents due to another’s negligence, the criminal justice system isn’t the only avenue for justice. A successfully presented wrongful death lawsuit filed in a civil court can help ensure that that responsible parties are held financially accountable for their actions.
