NSC: Missouri ranks next-to-last for road safety

Missouri drivers should keep track of the road safety ratings from governmental agencies so they know what to watch out for when on the road. Given the number of dangers that currently exist and are cropping up on a regular basis, some motor vehicle accidents are unavoidable and will happen no matter what precautions are taken. Regardless of whether it was a matter of circumstance or the auto accident occurred due to the negligence and recklessness of another, a legal filing can be useful to getting compensation after a crash.

The National Safety Council designates Missouri as one of the worst states in the nation for road safety. Out of the 50 states in the union, Missouri was 49th and received a grade of “F” for safety. Only nine states received that designation. The grades were accrued based on such factors as people driving under the influence, being a distracted driver, texting and driving and more.

Missouri law enforcement often expresses its frustration with the limitations that the law has placed on their ability to put a stop to dangerous acts they witness. Police say that 96 percent of accidents they investigate could be avoided if drivers adhered to the law and common sense. The NSC states that Missouri is one of 18 states that treats the failure to wear a seatbelt as a secondary offense meaning that it will not result in a law enforcement officer pulling the driver over if it is witnessed.

In addition, the texting and driving law is only applicable for drivers under 21 and those who are in a commercial vehicle. Officers commonly see a vast proportion of drivers who are using their phones, but can do nothing about it. November and December are widely regarded as the worst months for fatal crashes in the state.

With these numbers and anecdotal evidence from law enforcement, it is imperative that drivers take care when out on the road. Unfortunately, there will be accidents because of the above listed behaviors and other acts that drivers unwisely take. A lawsuit is essential to recover compensation for injuries, medical costs, lost time at work and the loss of a loved one. A lawyer who is experienced in car accidents can help.
